After Emeli's sister sent in a video to a BBC talent contest of Emeli performing an original song, she was ultimately named one of the winners. Although offers started rolling in, Emeli wanted to focus on her education and began studying clinical neuroscience at Glasgow University.

In 2010, Emeli decided it was time to start focusing on her music career, and finally signed with a record label to work on her debut album. Since then, she has toured with Coldplay, performed at the London Olympics, the iTunes Festival, and appeared on several talk shows.

Her debut US album Our Version of Events (named UK's best-selling album of 2012) was released last year and has been receiving rave reviews ever since. Even her peers have taken notice of her talent. Alicia Keys has said that Emeli is "A magnificent new artist from the UK...I just love her style and her flow...super raw." Adele tweeted about Emeli, saying,"How incredible is she?"
