FAST FIVE: Things to Know About Being a New Dog Owner

92 PRO-FM’s Jessica recently became a brand new owner of a baby bulldog, Porkchop. Here are 5 things she would tell every new dog owner before they jump in.

5. You will not be sleeping much anymore

You think “Hey I have a puppy, he or she will sleep all night.” No, that won’t happen.  You’ll be getting up at least twice a night to take him or her outside to go to the bathroom.  That lasts about 3-4 weeks.

4. Your pup is going to bite…and try to eat EVERYTHING

…could be shoes…yes, an obvious one, but cabinet knobs, wooden steps, plants, grass, rocks, concrete steps, corners of doors, anything!

3. Pee Pads – Not always successful

I have mixed emotions about pee pee pads…because at least with my pup, he will never pee in the middle of the pad, always a corner…so either way I’m cleaning pee off the floor, so why bother, but I do appreciate his effort.

2. Positive Reinforcement.  Do it up.

Positive reinforcement…the more “good boys” or “good girls” you throw out there the better.  I believe my pup really responds to that.

1. It’s Worth It

At the end of the day, after all the lack of sleep, the not being able to take a shower without him crying outside the tub, the carrying up and down the stairs to take him out to go to the bathroom, the pair of flip flops that you foolishly left out for the taking and the removal of every area rug in the house…when you get home after a long day and you have that adorable love filled face welcoming you it’s all worth it.
