Thursday, June 19th is Juneteenth, a special day for African Americans… But the day is also celebrated by people of all ethnicities. It has also become an important part of the conversation about race in America. Communities all over Southern New England have planned observances – from Providence to New London – and the shared goal is to educate, empower, and celebrate.

Saturday, June 14th: Simsbury Juneteenth Celebration | 1:00pm – 5:00pm | 24 Iron Horse Blvd, Simsbury, CT

Saturday, June 14th: Juneteenth Festival | 11:00am – 4:00pm | Hempstead Houses, 11 Hempstead St, New London, CT

  • New London’s Juneteenth Celebration commemorates the end of slavery in the United States after the Civil War. Partnering with the New London NAACP and OIC New London, the Hempstead Houses are home to this yearly community event highlighting the African American history of the Hempstead Houses and the surrounding New London neighborhood. Join us as we engage in activities encouraging conversations about emancipation, cultural awareness, and civic responsibility.

Thursday, June 19th: 2nd Annual Taste of Juneteenth | 12:00pm – 6:00pm | Farm Fresh RI, 10 Sims Ave, Providence, RI

Friday, June 20th: MSVL Sunset Concert Series: Juneteenth 2025 Edition | 6:00pm – 9:00pm | Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge, South Water St, Providence, RI

Saturday, June 21st: Newport Annual Juneteenth Celebration | 11:00am – 4:00pm | 32 Touro Street, Newport, RI

  • The event will feature speakers, historians, storytellers, live music and dance performances, youth activity booths, craft vendors, food trucks, colonial musicians, the Bristol Fife & Drum Corp; traditional Indigenous dance performances; a drum performance by master African artist Sidy Maiga with a hands-on Drum Circle; and storytelling by Valerie Tutson of the RI Black Storytellers, plus an encampment of regimental reenactors and more.
